Newspapers in Education (NIE)-Free Newspapers and Lesson Plans for Classroom Teachers

Newspapers in Education (NIE) is a program that supplies classrooms with free physical and/or digital copies of newspapers. This is an invaluable service for classroom teachers and schools.

This year, I have a physical subscription to my local newspaper delivered to my classroom every Monday.

I also have two digital subscriptions to national newspapers-Seattle Times and the New York Times. The digital subscriptions are way more than what the newspapers' websites offer. The papers are actual digitized copies with stellar navigation abilities. The Seattle Times will even read the articles to you if you ask it nicely ;) This is great for the Special Education students.

On top of the newspapers themselves, I also get free lesson plans emailed to me every day, which often include ready made worksheets.

Do not hesitate to get this free resource for your classroom and/or school.

Teachers like free, administration loves free, and districts love free!

Media literacy is a hot topic in education.

Usually, when we think media literacy, we vision a digital dance of computers, internet, and apps for mobile devices.

Newspapers and Magazines are also important to learn to navigate and appreciate. Of course, this does not just include the hard copy versions, as the decline of print newspaper has forced news companies to expand to digital and electronic editions/subscriptions.

You do not have to be an English or Social Studies teacher to use newspapers effectively in your classroom. Newspapers are full of real life data for math classes and articles on the latest advances in science topics. P.E. and health teachers find latest health and sports news at their fingertips.

Most news sources that provide this service also provide ready made lesson plans, worksheets, list of additional relevant resources, and much more on their online homepages.

Perhaps the most convincing reason to sign up for NIE is because its FREE! With no money available for extras, we need fresh curriculum sources that will not require any premium educational resource monies.

The NIE website provides additional general details about the program, but you cannot get or apply for your paper subscriptions from them.

You must contact your local paper for an application. Find lists and links of your local newspapers at Newspapers.com or at the Google Directory. Additionally, a program list is available here.

Often, local newspapers make hard copies available for classroom use.

Additionally, regional and national newspapers often make digital edition/subscription programs available nationwide. My favorite resources being the New York Times andSeattle Times digital editions.
