LG Rumor Touch Hack Central meets "Willie in SF"
One of the fundamental problems of installing 3rd party apps on the LG Rumor Touch has been the need for a PC to create JADs from JARs and to be able to download the JARs (blocked on Lg Rumor Touch).
Willie in SF was kind enough to drop by our LG Rumor Touch Hack Central blog here and leave some comments on his discoveries on how to solve our fundamental PC Independence problem.
I asked Willie if he would be willing to let me publish his ideas here as part of this blog, and he agreed.

Install 3rd party apps on the LG Rumor Touch mobile phone (3g mobiles) from Virgin Mobile or Sprint. Download apps from my personal collection for free. Links to best websites to get apps.
Required Installs Using a PC
To set up the ability to do Over The Air (OTA) installations, you must have access to a PC to install blueFTP and JTextLite.
I am hosting both on FilesAnywhere, which is made for mobile access.
I highly recommend it as a location to upload backups of your JARs/JADs if you do not want to store them on the microSD.
Download
1. BlueFTP -Keep in Mind that this version is 1.5, which does not have all the abilities you may want to be able to do the job here. I will not host 1.6 because it is "cracked" and buying it legit from Medieval Software seems unavailable according to commenters. Umnet and GetJar both host this "cracked" version.
2. JTextLite
ALSO:
You must have Opera Mini installed-the latest version!
Basic Willie Plan
Process One-Download your Jar File in a Zip Archive
- Use the Opera Mini 5 version found at operamini.com ONLY.
- This version will not download JARs, but it will download ZIP archives.
- Zipped JAR files are a little tough to find.
- Do not bother sifting through the Umnet or Mobiles 24 type sites.
- You will have the most success finding zipped jars in blogs such as Esato or Free-Mobile-Messenger.
- You DO NOT need the JAD - we are gonna make our own.
- Download the ZIP file using OperaMini (Bolt or UC Browser often work too)
- Use BlueFTP to extract the JAR to your APPS folder in the root of your microSD.
- Still in BlueFTP, open the JAR file then open the META-INF folder and extract the MANIFEST.MF file to your APPS folder.
- Using BlueFTP, rename Manifest.mf to "YOUR JAR NAME.JAD"
Alternative-Process One
It is more likley that you will run in to the situation where there is no "zipped" JAR file to download.
In this case, we will need to find a way to download the JAR "straight up".
There are two ways that you can do this:
1. Use Bolt, UC Browser, or an OperaMod to download the JAR file. [These browsers do not have the built in restrictions imposed by Virgin Mobile or Sprint]
2. Use Opera Mini 5x [the regular OperaMini] by doing the following:
- In Opera, go to t9space.com.
- Open another Opera tab and find the URL of the JAR file. Copy it.
- Copy the URL JAR download link into the first window on t9space and hit the go button.
- If t9space likes the file, it will automatically rename the JAR to ZIP file and begin the download for you.
- Save to APPS.
- Using BlueFtp, rename the ZIP file extension to JAR by simply deleting the ZIP extension.
CAUTION:
T9space.com will only work on DIRECT jar links (ex.:http://whatever.whatever.com/yourfile.jar) and even then, it will not accept all direct links. Success rate = 2:3.
Process Two-Making the JAD
- Now using jTextlite program, edit your JAD.
- Correct the MIDlet-Jar-URL by typing the "YOUR JAR NAME.JAR" title in place of the "http" line. This will allow the JAD to point to the local JAR instead of a web address.
- Your new JAD needs ONLY the following MIDlet descriptors: "MIDlet-Name","Jar URL", "Jar Size", "Vendor", "Version", "URL Info", "Description", "Icon" and "-1".
- I you do not have these 9 MIDlets, make type them out yourself being careful of spaces and caps uniformity.
- Delete all other Midlet lines.
- If you leave any other Midlet descriptors you decrease the chances of being able to transfer your program successfully to your LG Rumor Touch.
- NOW SAVE your new JAD.
- Now power down the LG Rumor Touch or pull the battery (hard reset) and attempt to install the app.
- If it does not work, it may need Hex Editing, which will not be addressed here. You canjust add this to your list of "no goes".
- Willie stated that about 1 in 4 needed this extra work.

@hobo You have to unzip blueftp or minicommander on the computer and install them on to memory card first. After they are installed on the phone then you can use them to unzip any new downloaded files on phone. See Dana's other hub page for more info.
it appears ive gotten my opera mini working.
so essentially the only time we will be using a pc
is at the very beginning of this process to create the
hidden APPS folder on our phone. from there we no longer need a pc? or the blue ftp and jtextlite require
more work on the computer?

@willie or anyone with an answer, for about 5 days opera mini will load about 80% but will not finish that last 20%. without opera mini is it going to be possible to do this process sicne the native web browser has so many rstrictions?
@gagave, he usual problem is photos, you want to move them all to your SD card and you should see a huge improvement in that. If you go to your photos gallery and use the menu option move multiple (i think thats what it is) and select move all and it will go to sd card. Let me know if you need more help.
hey is this really random but i have an sd card it has lots of space but i dont have enought space in my phone i only have 2% left.. do u know were i can go to see whats on my phone and delte tht stuff..please and thank you
@kidready I think max file size for text is around 450kb. The only way to send a larger file is to use email. Gmail works great. Go to gmail scroll to bottom choose "basic html" then choose compose. It will then give you a option to attach file from phone memory card.
To Willie: Thank you for the reply (I usually don't post much on the net but I happen to like the Rumor Touch very much). You seem to be one of the more knowledgeable on the subject, so I have another question for you. When trying to send texts with an attachment I often get “Message size exceeds limit” (video mostly). Has anyone figured a way to send attachments of a reasonable size (500KB – 1Mb)? Any way of doing this would be great! Via texting, E-mail, or any other way. Example: the video found here http://www.zedge.net/videos/309715/funny-free-anim is 574KB a fairly small video size but it just won’t attach. TX in advance, Kidready. Also would like to discuss (at your convenience of course) the sound issue with video, possibility of video that utilizes the whole (very decent) screen, and more but for now any help would be greatly appreciated. TX again KR.

I JUST tried to replicate what you described. IT DOWNLOADED on the first second and third tries on my pc using IE. Sorry I don't have a better answer.
Try another browser. OR you can just directly dl it to your vmrt, extract the jad & jar and just load them. DONT understand why you would bother with a pc at all. IT JUST TAKES LONGER.
To Willie: Trying to DL to PC doesnt seem to work?

There is still plenty out there, but just wondered if anyone else has this problem.
Have not not tryed installing all apps for direct to phone DL yet but it's usally easier to use PC.

@Brad, to use the vmpix deal, you have to rename the photo to a nice short name in the picture manager and then upload it to the program. It will work then. One of the easiest ways to upload photos to facebook is to set up your "mobile" stuff on Facebook.com and get the unique # that you can send pics to with a subject, etc. Also, you can look in to ping.fm, their service will post images to facebook through mms.
OR
There is always the Facebook app from VM. It works fine.
TIP: When using Opera5, view vmtouch.com in "Mobile View" (go to settings then turn on Mobile View, click back button in top right corner, then click yes to reload pages). MUCH BETTER VIEW THIS WAY.

the way i do is go to your albums go to upload there should be a link dat says upload via email click there it will give u email adress save and just upload your pics like that

Is it possible to upload pics to Facebook? I've tried the uploader and it doesn't work. Doesn't even let me upload to vmpix. Helio doesn't work. Can't send a text using the number 87. I've tried everything. Thanks.

Np broo i could see were people like you and dana are often overlooked and dnt get the credit u deserve even nyself up until trying to make these progams work on my phone would often look at this as a easy task but judging from tryiin it myself for the last 19 hours it is not easy at all yall have obviously put in countless hours and research into finding this stuff and figuring out ways to make itwork and you guys do this for nothing but to help most people would not waist there time if there is nothing in it for them so the least i can do is the two of you know your work is greatly appreciated!!! THANKS for the props. Sorry about the "big words". I am a bit of a dork so that's how I speak. hahaha.
ANYWAY my first suggestion is for you to grab a pencil & paper and jot down the steps. This way you will not drive yourself nuts going back & forth from whatever you are working on to Dana's Hubpages.
SECONDLY, note that this particular process (jad from jar using only MiniCommander 4.2 on your vmrt) is not yet complete. GENERALLY speaking, me or other commenters will post barely understandable comments then Dana will take those comments and re-work them into instructions for everyone.
LASTLY, these instructs are not yet complete. Give Dana a little more time to finish it. In the mean time, read all her other VMRT hubs here at HubPages. Learn how to:

Wow i must say i dont know how yall do all this my hats off to you.. I have been tryiin to do this for literally 15 hours straight i just can not get it..it is very frustrating it seems tht i keep leaving out key parts.. And having to come back to the page and read then try to return to were i left off... I do not see how yall can do this and find this stuff.. I never even knew that this phone had those capapalities until i stumbled upon this. Although it sounded fairly easy from reading the directions you have posted when i started trying to follow them i kept finding myself lost.. I like to look at myself as
a pretty smart guy but to start from scratch and find all this software. Wow it really takes a genuis you guys great at what you do its alot harder than it looks.. I see that yall are both very busy but if there is any way that either of you could like walk me through this with links and like smaller words that i could maybe understand better it would be greatly appreciated.. @Willie, thanks, that gives me enough to go on.
Alternative procesws #1 looks good. ^would emphasize that t9space.com will only work on DIRECT jar links (ex.: http://whatever.whatever.com/yourfile.jar) and even then, it will not acdcept all direct links. SUCCESS rate of dloading using t9space with DIRECT jar link is about 2:3.
Re: MiniCommander 4.2: yep, I used mostly trial & error. SOME TIPS:
- PRESS 9 on your keyboard for full screen. For our purposes, split screen is not needed. BESIDES, I do not know how to use it yet :)
- Note that MiniCommander 4.2 is a file mgr.with full writing permisissions. BE CAREFUL not to inadvertantly delete important files with MiniCommander 4.2! TiP: Watch out for mistakenly hitting 8 then enter on your keyboard. THIS is the delete function. (Same as pressing "back" key then " I" key in BlueFTP). THERE IS NO WAY THAT I KNOW OF TO RECOVER MISTAKENLY DELETED FILES. I learned all this the hard way.
- Tap a file (ex. YourJar.jar) to bring up the touchscreen menu which will appear @ bottom of screen.
- Nav to & Highlight YourJar.jar (using softkeys or tap or both). Lightly double tap the letter R. Main options menu appears. Tap or PRESS 1 THEN 6 TO generate Jad. I am a crappy tapper, so I use keyboard when at all possible.
- to edit new jad, highlight (select) said jad, press 5 to pull up jad file contents in utf-8 text. PRESS 5 again to edit jad.
In my layman's opinion, MiniCommander 4.2 is THE killer app for VMRT app loading. It has many features that we haven't even begun to explore. Willing to bet that there is more than one way (in addition to the above) to use MiniCommander as a Jad Generator/text editor/file mgr.
Try it yourself, Dana, then put it in easier to understand instructs for everyone, as I totally suck at writing step-by-steps. SORRY.
@Willie, of course after I ask you this question, I press 1 on the MC and up pops the freak'n help menu....so I guess that answers my question.
@Willie, will you look over "Alternative Process One" I just added.
I'm going to work on the MiniCommander Tutorial next. Did you just learn how to use the L/R and Number keys through trial and error??
Or is there a reference somewhere- I looked at the manual you left a link for, but as far as I could tell it did not have instructions for using the number pad.
Long and short, any insight in to how to best use the number pad for the lay people (most of my readers), let me know ;)

Has full episodes of Simpsons and first 6 seasons of Family Guy in mp4. FREE & VMRT compatible. Pretty hefty files to dload using vmrt only. I've gotten them to dload with my vmrt, but it took more than 6 hours. Since it takes so long, the connect likely to fail b4 you finish. Suggest you use pc. Save to MemoryCard/VIDEO. DO NOT store them "In Phone" as they will consume big chunks of your memory (> 40mb each episode)FYI, my crappy pc takes approx 10 mins to dload a full episode. This is great stuff to watch while commuting to work/school. Go get 'em before they take them down.
Also, http://mytinyphone.com has beaucoup free ringtones as well as some full song mp3's and java games/apps. All Free.

@Dana - looks great, but you left out "MIDlet-Name:" in the list of required descriptors - it won't work without it. (note that my original instructs omitted this too, but I amended it in my subsequent post.) SORRY for the confusion.
