How to Change The Language From French to English in Hybryde Evolution Linux

Updated on July 21, 2012

Hybryde Evolution is the dark horse of Live Linux Distributions.

I've often wanted to experiment with different desktop environments without installing every single one of them and logging in and out repeately to try the new user interface.

Hybryde Evolution makes this a reality!

Hybryde offers 9 different desktop environment interfaces:

  1. Enlightenment 17
  2. GNOME 3 - GNOME Shell
  3. GNOME 3 "Fallback" mode
  4. KDE
  5. LXDE
  6. Openbox
  7. Unity
  8. Xfce
  9. FVWM

Instantly switching between these user interfaces is a breeze using a specialized 10th interface called the Hy-Menu.

Even open applications are transported to the new desktop environment without incident - so no logging out, no closing programs, and lots and lots of fun.

The Rub

The only real sticky point is that Hybryde Evolution is hardwired to use French as the default language in the live DVDs.

Being an English speaker, I find it cumbersome to stumble my way through the menus trying to draw on my early childhood introduction to French, my Spanish training, and looking at good ol' icons.

Naturally, I wanted to change the defualt language to English.

What You Will Learn Here

The goal of this hub is to show you how to change the default language of all the desktop environments in one easy step from French to English in the Live DVD.

Important to Remember!

This process will have to be repeated each time you run the live DVD, as changes made while running the DVD will not persist since it is a live DVD and not a hard drive installation.

Once completed, you will notice the the Hy-Menu is still somewhat French - this is because it is hardwired and hand coded by the designer.

Will We Ever See An English Version?

The designer of Hybryde Evolution stated in a forum post in June 2012 that he had not expected it to be so popular or to make an appearance on DistroWatch.com.

Since the desire for additional languages like English is significant, he intends to work on reworking the Hy-Menu in the future to support language switching.

Official Hybryde Evolution Description

DistroWatch.com description:

Hybryde Linux is an Ubuntu-based distribution for the desktop. Its most unusual feature is an option to switch rapidly between multiple desktop environments and window manager without logging out - the list includes Enlightenment 17, GNOME 3 (GNOME Shell and GNOME 3 "Fallback" mode), KDE, LXDE, Openbox, Unity, Xfce and FVWM.

This is achieved via a highly customisable Hy-menu, which also allows launching applications and configuring the system. All open applications are carried to any of the available desktops. The system offers an interesting way to work fluidly in a multi-desktop environment.

On first entering a new desktop environment after making the French to English changes, you will need to respond to this prompt. I recommend for easiness sake to select "update names" to just keep as much in English as possible.
