5 Android Apps Worth Buying

Android is a wonderful open source operating system.

As a result, there are many many free apps.

"Free" is a standard in the Android world.

Many "free" apps use ads as a source of revenue.

Some developers prefer to just sell a "pro" version of an app that has a few extra features and no ads compared to what is likely titled the "lite" version of their app with fewer features and ads.

Apps that run without ads on my Samsung Intercept are faster and well worth the money when the apps are too good to uninstall.

Some apps have no "paid" option, and we do not have to decide between the ad supported or the "pro" version.

This hub will record those apps that I have bought myself and do not regret. I will add to it over time. So, Stay Tuned! Suggest good ones you have tried and loved in the comments.

SlideIT Keyboard is an excellent option for the Android 2.1 users (like those with the Samsung Intercept) as a SWYPE-like keyboard.

I was shocked by how well it predicted what I was trying to "slide". After using SWYPE with the LG Optimus V, which is the quintiessential slide keyboard, I can truely appreciate just how good SlidIT Keyboard really is.

I notice very little difference between the two, and since SWYPE is not readility available for the Samsung Intercept, SlideIT is an excellent option.

There is a time limited trial version, which I would suggest using first just to make sure you like it.

Another positive is that SlideIT supports many different languages with free plugins, which can all be previewed in the Android Marketplace.

The full version costs $6.17 USD at the moment, but it is well worth it if you do not have the option to use SWYPE.

I originally started organizing my apps, games, and utilities with the free, AppOrganizer. It was a great app, but Folder Organizer is superior. Folder Organizer has sweet widgets, better icons, and just seems more natural.

My Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept is not the most robust internal memory Android on the market. A good organization scheme helps save some of this precious memory by allowing me to have category icons.

Category icons like "Internet" allow me to have just one icon that will bring up all of my apps in a quick window menu that I've pre-labeled "internet". 

The biggest pro over the free AppOrganizer is that Folder Organizer also indexes and allows sorting in to categories with corresponding category icons your bookmarks, contacts, and shortcuts in addition to organizing all of your apps.

I am a gamer. I love the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.

Xbox Live Statistics is the best Xbox Live app on the market selling for a CHEAP $0.99.

It keeps track of all of your achievements for all of your games (shows both the ones you've completed and the ones you have yet to complete), syncs your avatar, allows you to send and receive Xbox Live messages, and check on the status of all of your friends.

Xbox Live Statistics also comes with some stellar widgets for new messages or to notify you about friends online.

There is no other Xbox Live app that does all of these things in one application on the market. 

The developer is actively engaged in making this app better and provides updates and provides customer support at the official website.

The DoggCatcher Podcast Player is the best podcast listening app on the Android Market.

This is why some 10,000-50,000 (the range bracket in the Android Market) people are willing to rate it at 4.5 stars and pay $6.99 for it. 

$6.99 may seem like quite a sum for an Android app, and I remained quite unconvinced that the DoggCatcher Podcast Player was worth it until I tried it. 

I have zero regret.

It is so much more versatile, intuitive, reliable, and has so many more features than the free podcast players I tried before like MediaFly, Google Listen, Stitcher (although I still use this app sometimes for its unique multi-source playlist features), and others.

When you go on the Android Market, there are a handful of office suites to choose from.

Documents to Go is a popular one and ThinkFree Office is as well.

The best option, however, is the fairly completive QuickOffice Connect Mobile Suite (which right now is on a 50% off sale @$9.99).

After playing with it for an hour or so, I can say with confidence that I am thouroughly impressed and its deep integration with services like MobileMe, Dropbox, Box, and Google Docs is what truely sets it apart from the competition.

I've tried many apps to integrate Google Docs, Dropbox, and Box in to my phone office, but the end result is a fairly fragmented and frustrating experience.

QuickOffice Connect has multiple account support for Google Docs, Dropbox, Box, and MobileMe, and I was able to create a Word 2007 docx and save it in three of these locations within seconds. Talk about the ease of redundant backups.

I can also retrieve any file for editing or viewing from these services by clicking "Browse", then the account I want, and without a wait, I see the service's entire folder structure and my files.

If you buy in the next few days, QuickOffice Connect is just $9.99. You will never need another office app because this one does word, excel, and powerpoint in legacy formats as well as current filetype formats.
